In a remote Dogon village dancers climb on top of an elders house to start
a funeral dance. The drummers and others villagers have just arrived and
raffia clad dancers sway to the heavy rythmic beat. |
Taking a break from the excitement of the dance. |
The Drummers arrive! The funeral dance is about to begin as drummers from
surrounding villages announce their arrival. |
A fetish offering covered in sacrificial sheep’s blood. |
Beautiful hand painted geometric designs adorn this meeting place. The elders
used this area for initiation ceremonies. |
The rounded architecture accents this small mosque. The Dogon share a
mix of traditional beliefs and Islam. |
An awesome sight! The funeral dance has reached it’s peak with the arrival
of this seven meter mask and dozens of other masked participants. |
This early morning dance involves the young dancers and the elders guidance
to adhere to strict traditions. |
These costumes are made of textile, cowrie shells, tree bark fiber and natural
dyes and are the first to appear in this funeral dance. |
My favorite photo of a proud Dogon Dancer with his awesome mask. |
