To find the most authentic objects I travel into the bush on a Yamaha Desert Motorcycle capable of crossing any terrain. On my Journeys I carry a shortwave radio and one change of cloths. The searing desert heat and Harmaton winds can be overwhelming at high speeds, almost taking my breath away. During this two month trek I covered over 5,000 kilometers on the cycle.
 
 
 
 
The Dogon are excellent hunters and often place the skulls of animals they have killed and eaten into the mud walls of their homes. The collection of jaw bones and skulls are believed to be a powerful fetish, providing food and health to the village.
 
 
 
 
Nestled into the side of 2000 foot cliffs, this abandoned dwelling dates back to the early 1500's.

My friend, Amate, is a highly respected hunter and wrestler of the Dogon. He is confident and friendly, always willing to share large quantities of his homemade traditional millet beer.
 
 
 
 
The "Hogon" is the eldest and most respected member of the Dogon village, and lives apart from the others in a traditional dwelling tucked into the cliff. The villagers consult the Hogon on matters from fertility problems to settleing disputes. This fetish offering was arranged by the Hogon.

The Elders of the Village meet here to discuss important ceremonies such as initiation and funeral dances. Notice the painted walls and fetish offerings in terracotta pots.
 
 
 
 
The Dogon have painted figures of ancestors and dancers since the 1500's and the images last for centuries. The figure on the right is a man dancing the "Kanaga" mask, a funeral mask.
 
 
 
 
Offerings are made to achieve harmony in the village and promote fertility. This exceptional collection of pots, bones, and other offerings is an excellent representation of Dogon fetish beliefs.
